We thought how cool we can bring our son. Next to the hot tub there is a sign that says no kids under 10. It says" all guests are welcome, kids must be accompanied by an adult, toddlers and infants need to wear a swim diaper etc. Next to the pool there is a very large Pool Rules sign. On our first day at the spa my significant other and I went on a 30 minute tour of the spa - no kids was never mentioned. No where in the Kapalua brochure does it say no kids. The spa is a major part of the attraction of staying at Kapalua Villas. The villas offers access to the spa as part of facility. We spent 7 wonderful nights in Kapalua Villas. We question whether we will return to Spa Montage again next year. For the substantial price increase that came with the Montage brand, we expected an equal level of increase in quality of experience but found the opposite, a decline. The beds had been replaced with typical aluminum framed and mesh-topped lounge chairs that you might find at an average pool. Also gone from the outdoor area were the comfortable cushion-topped daybeds. What was available at the hot tub was an infestation of annoying white flies in the adjacent shrubbery. They no longer had guest service at the outdoor pool and hot tub area. We inquired about the cost of a glass of orange juice and learned that it was twelve bucks. They only serve beverages and snack foods. The juice bar no longer served food from a menu. The staff that took our reservations and interacted with us at the front desk seemed less experienced and less customer focused than previous years. ![]() This was our first visit to the spa under the Montage management. Montage has now taken over the former Ritz properties and the spa. My wife and I have had treatments at this spa every year since it first opened as the Kapalua Spa that was built next door to the Ritz Carlton Residences and Villas in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii (on the site of the old Kapalua Bay Hotel). It is part of the "Montage Spa Day" I enjoy most, not just a massage but a day long experience. I was hoping that as with other spa locations lunch and drinks around the pool would be available. Not that I needed that, just not the over the top attention to customers I've come to appreciate from Montage resorts. In any other spa a discount or gift certificate would have been promptly offered. Ummm after hours I would think he would inspect. He said he was a man so didn't go into the woman's area. The snap to it response I would have gotten elsewhere just wasn't there. I brought this lack of attention to cleanliness to the attention of the manger, a very nice man BTW, but that lackadaisical attitude was there. This may sound extreme but it's these little things that have always made me feel safe in a standard of service and cleanliness that has me return again and not go to the "massage envy" type chains. The mouthwash and deodorant bottles were mucky. I took a picture of the stairwell to the massage area that was so dusty that someone wrote the words "dusty" in it. The level of cleanliness was simply not there. We had to go back and track some one down. We came a little late and we're not guided in so there were no robes or slippers. ![]() While the massage therapists there are second to none (as they are in all montage spas) there was a certain lack at this one. I regularly go to the one in Laguna Beach.
